I'm glad the FBI is involved because they have the best investigative tools and lab in the world and getting data off a hard drive is not that hard!

I've worked with reading raw hard drive data and how programs delete files, etc.

Most of the time when we delete a file it is still completely on the hard drive.

There is just a flag that tells the software that the space is no longer needed and can be written over with a new file. But the original may persist for a long time, even forever. And even after it is overwritten there is still some persistent magnetic "image" of the previous data, similar to when you erase something on paper. The FBI can lift this image with their sophisticated equipment. These facts are widely known and published so I'm not revealing anything HERE...

For top secret govt. file deletion it is REQUIRED that a file be erased and overwritten SEVEN times with alternating data to ensure "complete" removal (statistically speaking - that is).

So for all you CRIMINALS reading this your computers are your best record of what you've done!!!!
