Joran v d Sloot: A Contrast In Character

Following up on a story by Steve Huff of The Dark Side, and having reviewed certain records, including text and images, which cannot be made public as they involve minors not implicated in this case, it does seem apparent that 17 year old high school senior Joran v d Sloot walked a strange and wide line between man and boy.

At the same time the 6'4" school athlete was said to be a proficient gambler frequenting the clubs and casinos in Aruba, he was also known to have had a romantic involvement with a 7th grade girl of thirteen until her parents learned of the relationship and made their daughter break off the relationship back in March.

The remark Mrs. VDS made about being upset as Joran was to start school in the US???? Unbelievable. Have to feel for her and Joran don't we? NOT. What is wrong with that family??? As if THEY and their son are the victims. I say send Joran to the US, I really don't think he'd be too welcome here at the moment or EVER. I also have to say I feel for all the good people of Aruba and in watching the news, there are many, we certainly cannot generalize as to everyone on the island BUT I am sorry to those of you who are good because if what is going on is a coverup or a coverup being worked on and the Holloways receive no justice, I certainly, as will many Americans, will boycott Aruba and never go there. That is not fair to those there that are good decent people but it is the only way to stop such things from happening again or to see that justice is done in this case. And regardless of the difference in legal systems, it makes absolutely no sense in any legal system to allow the last people seen with this girl days upon days to destroy evidence, get their stories straight, possibly let dad help get rid of things and concoct a story, etc., etc., etc. I hope the Aruban officials have more info than they let on and the right person is charged or all people involved charged AND PUT AWAY because if not, the way they let these boys go in the beginning for days on end will be something they can never explain or make up for. I fear either no charges will come or a coverup is going on and at the very most, what will be said is it was a horrible accident that they covered up and then they will get a slap on the hand, either no time or very little time in prison in an attempt to appease us Americans and the Holloway family and save these upper class Aruban boys. I hope I am wrong but there are tons of us here in the US that believe this is what looks like is going on. I read in another BLOG that it was Natalee's family who even found out about these boys and beat the Aruban police to them! Had they not and had they not went to Aruba and kept on, would the powers that be in Aruba have even gone near these boys EVER? Especially their judge in training's son??? I myself doubt they ever would have without pressure and the Holloway family tracking it down. They knew who the girl went with and ignored it until the Holloways tracked the boys down. Then they picked them up and let them go!! This is not a minority opinion, it is the opinion and take of most of us here in the U.S. from what I have seen.

Wow, such a lack of compassion and plain-old racism and hatred from some posters here.

The so-called Christian, Publious, maybe you need to read the bible again. Did Jesus suggest we be racists and hate-mongers? Did Jesus coin the expression eurotrash? I don't think so.

And anyone wanting to crucify Joran's mom for her sadness over the fact that he just threw his life away, this is simply the picture of a parents's unconditional love and is nothing to despise. It's completely human and what separates us from animals. Taken out of context, and it only shows she cares about her son. It does not show that she cares nothing about the victim and her family. Has anyone asked her if she cared about them? That would be the relevant answer, and I am sure she would care like any other parent would care about another person's child. If you are not a parent, you probably can't understand this stuff.

The masses run amok with theories and accusations, and they unleash their lack of emotional intelligence into whatever direction their fingers point. But the whole island of Aruba did not commit this crime, nor did Holland nor did all of europe - good grief! There were probably just a few very bad young apples that finally learned how wrong things can go when you treat other humans with complete disregard - including maybe even the dad, who has not shown the moral courage to demand that his son confess out of what we Americans would call plain decency, also known as compassion for the other family). There was an incompetent and probably corrupt police "investigation" that let the bad guys free for ten days and lost much of the physical evidence while they jailed the wrong people due to ill-advised scapegoating reasons. And there's probably a economic/tourism department that is in damage control mode and injected some horrid political distortions into the mix. That's about it.

It was a tragedy for all involved, caused by some boys that look, from American standards, like they never received proper parenting. Nobody is going to boycott Aruba, but many Americans will correctly exercize more discretion when making their future travel decisions. You can't blame people for wanting to travel where the authorities are competent in solving and punishing crimes against tourists. But c'mon people, stop all the ignorant hatred in every direction, please.

hey Dutchman, all I know is our family is WAY WAY better off than all of my cousins, my dad came from a family of 12 so we got hundreds of cousins

when they come to Canada, they have to book a year in advance to go charter because they can't afford the flight over, we don't have such problems

some of my cousins are better off than others but when you consider the taxes, the electricity bill you pay at least 4 times as much, gas, you pay at at least 4 times as much, etc, the average Dutch person doesn't have the same disposal income as someone living even in Canada at the same wages......

I'm new to this arena called Riehl World but have read all these posts, some with laughter and others with disdain. I'm only leaving this post to say that regardless of the outcome of this case of Natalee Holloway's disappearance in Aruba and all the good and bad things being said now about this small island country ... I have learned a great deal of which I didn't previously know about dutch laws and lifestyles. At any rate, as nice a place as I'm sure it is and that there are certainly very nice people there who are just as disappointed and upset over this whole situation .. having learned what I have about the way their systems work with respect to the law I for one will certainly never find myself in dutch territory of any kind .. EVER. I would hardly subject myself to the possibilties of such a system where crime evidence and information are sequestered from the public and media over extended periods in a manner in which the manipulation of that evidence and/or information could be possible. Not to come to much to the defense of the media in the US but at least in our country it's right out front and if later it's found to be incorrect or manipulated in any way, well the media thrives on those stories too and researches them just as diligently. In ending I keep my thoughts and prayers with the Holloway family and hope for closure soon .. one way or another.

p.s. ~ there has been much ado about the low murder and rape statistics in Aruba but in light of finding the decapitated man just a few days ago that will increase by one already this year. I wonder how many actually are never found or reported in the name of good tourism advertising? Just me thinking ...

Please be aware that the reason that you can live a wealthy lifestyle, is caused for 95 percent by the fact that you have been born is a relatively rich country. In other words, you could as well have bene born in a third world country. Do not take anything for granted and be thankfull for the things you receive for free beyond your control.

I am amazed at some of the things I am reading. Yes, I truly feel sorry for this girl's family, but I also feel sorry for Joran and his family, as well. Being a 28 year old female, I can honestly say that many of the guys I knew in high school would have had the same pictures on their website, and a lot of the girls would have gone home with guys after a night of drinking. I just don't think that it is fair to speculate on his attitude or past behavior. Yes, Natalee's mother said he was conceited and arrogant, but of course she is going to hate the last person that was with her daughter and couldn't tell her what happened. In addition to this, if I were to ever have children and they were in Joran's place, you can bet I would stick up for him the way they have, and I am sure my parents would do the same. People criticize his parents for not saying anything. What are they supposed to say? Their son's face is all over the news, and will likely not be forgotten even after he is found innocent. I don't blame them for not going in front of the camera, while crying and trying to convince everyone their son is not guilty. As I recall, everyone is considered innocent until proven guilty.

What if she did go back to the hotel and was taken by someone else? People just want to put the blame on Joran, because he is an extremely good looking guy and that gives an otherwise missing persons story an exotic edge. This is ridiculous. People should just trying to figure out in their own mind what happened, and let the truth come out.

We hear so many times that the Aruban police are doing things wrong, but that is how they do it in their country. I believe the people in the rest of the world don't believe we do things right in our legal system, but let's see what the US would do if someone from another country came here and tried to tell us how to solve a crime.

One other thing is, if he had all of these "tourist hook-ups", isn't it strange that this is the first time one turns up missing? Did none of the others refuse to sleep with him, driving him to a fit of anger? Or were they not pretty enough to sell? He looks like a good guy, and I am sick of people dragging him through the mud when they are an entire country away and are going on speculation only.

I don't mean to sound uncaring, because I deeply hope that Natalee will be found alive, but people just need to leave Joran's family alone until the truth comes out; no one is even mentioning the other boys families, or much about them.

Michele, he looks like a good guy? Scott Peterson many thought looked like the "perfect" husband. So did Ted Bundy to many look like a good guy. I disagree with all who say he is very good looking. He looks like an overgrown ox to me and in the pics with girls, like a young overgrown ox who thinks he is a "big" adult. None of this makes me convict him in my mind, but in response to your comment on how we judge, you judged he "looks" like a good guy and my personal judgment by looks and pics is as stated above. Much more importantly, with regard to the Aruban methods of investigation, how anyone can listen to all and as we all do, try to glean what is true away from what is hype, cannot think what has went on with the investigation was not either (1) messed up; or (2) a coverup is being attempted but things stay the same for days in a row because they are between a rock and a hard place--they don't want to convict this kid but they know the Holloways, the American media (don't think much of our media but it certainly keeps the pressure on in good ways some time as in this case) won't stand for it, has got some brain cells on inactive duty. (As with some of mine with that long winded sentence I got lost with.) As with all, I hope I am wrong and there is no coverup going on but I find it difficult to believe. And maybe villifying their investigation and legal system is not right but any legal system that does not center on finding a missing person first and foremost is based on a real lack of common sense. A girl is missing and they do not pick up the last people seen with her right off the bat!!! Where else would that ever happen? When they do FINALLY pick them up, they question them and let them go, all of the above while day after day is passing with a missing girl! If a child or even an adult woman was missing and the suspected perpetrator was picked up and it was not confirmed the person was dead, the pressure would be on in the US and I suspect most countries to get that person to tell you where the missing person was right off the bat in the event they could be (1) saved; or (2) found even if dead while evidence could be preserved and the body could be found. In I suspect any civilized nation, the last person to see the missing person would be picked up IMMEDIATELLY and the pressure put on to find the MISSING person! They took the word of this kid and picked up INNOCENT security guards. The kids were picked up as witnesses. The security guards had their hands cuffed behind their backs and EVERY time you see one of these kids brought in or transported for a hearing, their hands are cuffed in front! The kids were seen with the missing girl, the security guards NEVER were and this was known from the beginning! Natalee's family tracked down these kids before the Aruban officials ever even looked for them despite knowing they were the last ones anyone saw her with! The kids were only ever questioned because of the Holloways and the pressure and when questioned, were then let go. Days passed from day one until they were brought in the first time and days passed between the first time they were brought in and when they were finally arrested. Days to cover up, days to get rid of evidence. Days and days and days all while a girl is missing and the LAST people KNOWN to be seen with Natalee are ignored by the Aruban police! These are FACTS, not hype. This is an investigation and a legal system no one should question???? If incorrect, I will change my judgment of them should that happen but these facts above remain and are inexcusable in my opinion. They would be here and people would be upset and they should be just as upset there over such an investigation! I hope Natalee is alive although that looks unlikely but the Aruban authorities will have a lot to answer for say if she was tied up and hidden somewhere alive and died while they screwed around not even questioning those she was last seen with! These kinds of mistakes would be questioned and criticized of any legal system in any country by its own citizens or those of other countries watching from afar as we are!

And to those that say Aruba will not be boycotted and people will eventually go back, you are correct to a point I think. There are many who give a hoot what goes on and do not boycott or at least not spend their money somewhere they disagree on but there are many of us silent ones who do not forget. If this investigation does not end satisfactorily, until the day I die, I will never give Aruba one red cent of mine. To this day, I will not buy Bic lighters, Bic razors, Maybelline makeup, etc. even though I prefer all these products but I do not buy anything I know to be a French product due to Jacques Chirac and the attitude shown towards the US a few years ago now. Does it make a difference? Maybe not but at least I know I do not spend my money places I do not agree with when I know it. Am I anti French people or companies? Not really but maybe if enough did this, the people or companies would put pressure on their leader's attitude if they were affected. It is sometimes our only way of making a statement. My daughter was recently fired from Wal-Mart without a warning, never gave them a problem, etc. She was granted unemployment because Wal-Mart was wrong so I am not incorrect on her being fired without reason. I canceled my Wal-Mart credit card. I will never again shop there. I buy three pairs of glasses there a year w/exams. That is over. I get my oil changed there. That is over. They can afford to lose me, so what? But I am making my statement and can live knowing I am not contributing to what I think is a wrong or corrupt store and management in our town anyhow. The Aruban people I have seen talked to on TV seem very nice, very friendly, very decent, very caring. I am NOT slamming the Aruban people or the French people but the only way to make a statement if this investigation does not work out in the truth and only if Natalee is found and it is not determined she could have been saved will I ever in my lifetime give Aruba one red cent. It is the only way to ensure such a messed up investigation may never happen again if they want us back is to prove they are above suspicion with this investigation. Everyone who thinks I am wrong knows if it was in this country and the son was a son of a local judge where it happened or a politician or a business man and the son was not picked up for days and days if he was last seen with her and then was let go, indicated two black man in our country, they were arrested (but never seen with the girl but the son was), all of you and all of us would be very, very suspicious as to what kind of investigation was really going on and who knew who and was pulling strings on their son's behalf and why the heck should we not look at Aruba and what is going on the same way and be suspicious as we would be here???

Getting carried away and probably made a lot of typos and I mean to upset no one, I enjoy the back and forth and I think these places and these comments make us all look at the other points of view and sometimes adjust ours. I have at times but on this I think others should.

As of today, it is pretty much confirmed by the Aruban paper and our own TV that the focus is on Joran now and his is the story that constantly changes. He has now been moved to the prison. He is the first and foremost of interest according to all and pretty much confirmed. So much for someone who I guess "looks" like a good guy. He is being kept and detained for a reason, duh. His father was questioned extensively. And without the Holloways and our media pressure I for one am unsure if that would have ever happened. I 99.9 percent DOUBT IT.

As for the remark about Joran, other women and none disappearing before, it means absolutely nothing. Once again, Ted Bundy dated and never killed some whom he dated. Not calling the kid a serial killer at all, just saying it means nothing. She may have fought him, ticked him off if he has a short fuse, not just said no. And he may just be progressing. First a little forceful sex with how many girls and then maybe next interested in some sick tie up, gag and forceful fantasy, it certainly has happened, such progressions. Once again, not saying this is what happened or this is what he is, just saying the fact he has been with other girls and none of them have disappeared means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.

How great the Utah kid was found safe!

Anyone see about the meeting between Beth Holloway and Joran's family? Good for them they met with her and gave her some answers and sounds like all was amiable. Beth Holloway says she came away convinced others are involved and more will be questioned and brought in and that sure adds a twist. I heard that once before. However, she still convinced that Joran knows everything and is not telling. Also Greta VS reporter says there was a call early on between Joran and his father and phone was tapped and father told Joran not to talk and this is why father cannot talk to son in jail because police feel he impeding investigation and/or may know truth by telling son not to talk. Of course this is according to the father and while Mrs. H happy they give her some answers, they still say not sure he told all answers. Will give Aruba authorities some credit if they were tapping lines that early on, maybe there is some hope but still talk about the time that has gone by, etc. Still a fact that it sounds like all 3 of others including DJ have same stories but not Joran, his changes and changes and I guess one brother was about to be let go, was not part of things according to all but then Joran changes again and brings him and others back into it they say. This makes me wonder if Mr. VS (father's) story about others going to be questioned and/or arrested is true or based on his son's stories, the son who keeps involving other people, then changing the story to another, etc., etc., etc. May not be true. Whether total truth told or not, kudos to the VS parents for meeting with Mrs. Holloway and trying to be decent. And kudos to the Aruban PD for the phone tap. I also have to wonder with Joran's transfer to prison if they have all the answers they want from interrogation at PD if he has finally been transferred. I also, to give credit where credit may be due, wonder if Beth Holloway does have some more info than we know that she cannot share because if she does share it, it will compromise investigation as we keep hearing if any info is given to media, etc. and if she shares it, they will not give her more info. I hope that is the case. Just something I wonder about but it seems unlikely because she is still very frustrated and wanting answers.
