In a startling development, recently appointed spokesman for the insurgency in Iraq and former Iraqi Minister of Information, Mohammed Saeed Al-Sahaf today announced that the recent shooting of Giuliana Sgrena was simply the result of a prank gone wrong.
Evidently the Italian Journalist frequently engaged in prankish leg-pulling with her captors and a young AL-Zakawri lieutenant thought it would be funny to place a "kick me" sign on the journalist's back. "Unfortunately," said Al-Sahaf, he wrote Shoot Me! instead, as his English, it is not so very good. These guys," continued Al-Sahaf, "They are such cut-ups, you just don't know."
A spokesperson for the Italian government was unavailable for comment in light of this new revelation.
