Both campaigns spend more money and do better polling than the public sees, especially at this critical run up to Nov. 2. If the President is going to spend time in NJ, which also flows into PA coverage btw, Kerry is far from sitting pretty and PA certainly isn't off the table, as some have been reporting.
The important thing to note of Kerry's travels below is that Gore won Iowa and Wisconsin in 2000, Kerry doesn't have them or he wouldn't be going there. Fla is dynamic but seems to be moving more solidly Bush - if Kerry doesn't win Ohio and Pa the election is over. Given that, the fact that the Bush campaign's polling shows enough merit to visit NJ this late, Kerry is still facing an uphill climb.
The Bush campaign announced that the president would travel on Monday to New Jersey, where Democrats had counted on a solid lead. In September several polls showed Mr. Bush and Mr. Kerry running neck and neck in the state, but Mr. Kerry has recently edged back ahead.
Kerry travels: It (Las Vegas) was the first stop on a drive across the crucial states of Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, West Virginia, Florida and Pennsylvania between now and Tuesday.
