Conservatives Shouldn’t Abandon Rick Santorum

By
December 28, 2011

I've already said I support Perry, so a Santorum rise is problematic in that sense. But I think conservatives turning on Santorum, whatever their reasoning, simply because of one poll is a big mistake. It's the same Santorum Palin, Huckabee and many others have praised, after all.

CNN Poll: Romney on top, Gingrich fading & Santorum rising in Iowa

Let the voters vote. Like it, or not, Iowa's social conservatives have a right to have their say. I'm not a social conservative. But where, exactly, is it we draw the line in any attempt to marginalize a block of voters upon which the GOP must rely in 2012? If one wants to retain their credibility as a conservative, I'd suggest we don't try to do that. It's more destructive, as we only empower the media to do the very same thing when it suits their agenda, not ours.

And it is the media's agenda I see many conservatives using against Santorum today in their rush to attack him over one poll. Huckabee, whom I opposed, did well in Iowa and went on to have a run that threatened McCain almost right to the end. No prognosticator, or pundit, has any secret formula providing them any special road map as to how this is all going to play out in the end.

As conservatives, we either stand on principle and serious analysis, not silliness, or trumped up subjective views, or we fall. More importantly, as conservatives, we either stand together, or, again, we most assuredly fail.

The very same media that has endeavored for years to make Santorum toxic as a political presence, is the very same media that has and will malign a Perry, Bachmann, Palin, et al, so long as the politician in question is a conservative.

To put down our principles to take up their arguments simply because we somehow think it serves our agenda in this one instance only empowers them. It does not strengthen, or win, us anything. If we have a candidate, make the case for him, or her. That, not attacks on some other genuinely conservative candidate, is invaribly what yields us the best candidates in the end.

Frankly, I don't want Santorum to prevail in Iowa, as I've already backed Perry and think he's the best choice, given what they are. But I'm unwilling to throw out my principles to become the media's anti-Conservative water-boy in some misguided attempt to try and make myself look smart, as opposed to a principled conservative, which is what I mostly am – first, last and always and most importantly of all.

The primary will play out and events will take care of themselves. Much of the punditry done out here on sites both large and small – and on TV, or radio – has far less impact than perhaps we'd like to believe in the first place. So, when it's all said and done, I'd rather look back and believe that I did the right thing for a principled conservative, as opposed to the convenient thing for some perceived political benefit that most likely is more imagined, than real in the end.

  1. Rick Santorum likes live babies and Jews! He’s UNELECTABLE!

He has good hair. And likes God.

  4. You think Perry is the better choice. I’ve backed Romney because I believe he is the electable choice (though I’ve endorsed “Brokered Convention in 2012″). But I’ll tell you — for personal reasons I would love to see Santorum take it all and kick Obama’s scrawny butt (and his wife’s not-so-scrawny @$$s) to the curb.
You see, I graduated from the same high School as Rick Santorum, five years behind him. I was compared to him more than once by some of his former teachers. And I lived across the street from the VA hospital his dad ran, and met his father a few times. He’s a good guy with good values and good positions, and he comes from good people. I therefore hope this burst of popularity is the sign of things to come, and that he manages to pull off the upset.

  6. TexasFred says:

Out of those running, I like Perry the most, but Santorum would be a great choice, far better than Newt or Mittens…

  7. Nishner says:

    This is just weird:
In 1996, a son, Gabriel, was born prematurely and lived for only two hours. While pregnant, Karen Santorum developed a life-threatening intrauterine infection and a fever that reached nearly 105 degrees. She went into labor when she was 20 weeks pregnant and allowed doctors to give her Oxytocin to speed the birth.[111]
Karen Santorum wrote a book about the experience: Letters to Gabriel: The True Story of Gabriel Michael Santorum.[112] In it, she writes that the couple brought the deceased infant home from the hospital and introduced the dead child to their living children as “your brother Gabriel” and slept with the body overnight before returning it to the hospital.

  8. Dave B says:

I think the problem for Santorum is that his claim to the nomination is that he has held certain beliefs LONGER than others when it comes to social issues and that he has a record of activism when it comes to same. The problem with Congressmen and Senators that claim activism is that they vote and support but don’t make decisions after weighing all options with all their constituents in mind like executives must do. They may be right and even courageous but that claim rings hollow to most people. Are we the same as we were at age 18? I know I’m not. We are all a product of our life experiences, our mistakes, our successes, and we are who we are right now. The problem with all the candidates when they line up with Mitt Romney on issues presently is that there is essentially no difference whatsoever except on a few issues where Mitt is actually to the right of some of them and/or more pragmatic in his approach to others. Herman Cain was the only candidate that could compete with Mitt on business and economic acumen. Huntsman, Perry, and Mitt are the only candidates that have been executives. Mitt is the only one with successes in the private sector on his own without government assistance or riding the wave of their public sector appointments. Of the three governors he is the only one that got elected, governed in a liberal state and achieved conservative goals despite overwhelming opposition. Hell, Reagan was a Democrat at one time.

  9. sickofrinos says:

Dave B- Mittens achieved zero conservative goals during his layover as gov. of Mass. I know -I live here.
He is no conservative. He is a political ho bo traveling from state to state.
Bain and the LDS are his ticket. As well as all you rino’s.

  10. m says:

He can’t get the nominee and not well known. Santorum lost the US Senate race 10 years. It is the liberal poll that put him almost at the top. And that is exactly what they are doing to Romney because they want Romney to win and the liberals know that Romney can’t beat Obama in the general election. It is the liberal news media and PPP’s pick a candidate for the Republican Party. Let the Republican voters decide who is the best candidate on the 2012 GOP ticket.

This blog is a joke. Rick Perry is the best candidate? This writer is a complete idiot and loses any credibility by supporting a candidate who can’t even put complete sentences together.
